Botox and Dentistry
At Toronto Lakeshore Dental, in addition to our many traditional dental services that we offer to patients, we also offer Botox. Botox is particularly helpful for patients who grind their teeth at night, which is part of the reason we offer this service! Botox works by preventing the release of certain chemicals between a nerve and a muscle. This blocks the message for the muscle to work, and the muscle relaxes.
Benefits of Botox
Botox can be used to treat a variety of conditions but in relation to dentistry, it's often used to help patients stop grinding their teeth while sleeping. The botox injections can be used on the muscles controlling these harsh contractions, and can then allow patients to sleep easier, and stop grinding and damaging their teeth at night. We find that this treatment works extremely well for patients who are experiencing severe jaw problems, including TMJ, and the treatment lasts 4 to 6 months.
Bruxism is a more common problem that occurs in patients who grind their teeth, and it can cause frequent headaches, migraines, and wear and tear on your teeth. Since your muscles are basically working to damage your teeth, you want to have this issue treated as soon as possible to prevent any severe damage from occurring. This constant grinding while sleeping can cause fractures and the general wearing down of your teeth, and the headaches are generally what patients notice and try to treat.
Dr. Moore is certified in using Botox, and we can use this treatment to target the specific muscles that are causing your nighttime bruxism or TMJ. This means no more headaches, and your teeth won't have any further issues either.
