What Should I Expect at My Child’s First Visit?
Visiting the dentist for the first time might feel scary, especially for children. At Toronto Lakeshore Dental, we love to see children, and we start at an early age so we can establish a friendly relationship with them and help them feel comfortable about their future dental visits.
The First Visit
Our dentists like to see children for their first dental visit at the age of one year old, or six months after their first tooth erupts. While this may seem early, it gives us a chance to begin monitoring their oral development, answer any questions that parents might have, and begin to acclimate your child to our office.
As They Grow
As your child gets older, we'll incorporate gentle cleanings into their appointments as soon as they feel comfortable. We always explain what we are doing before starting any complex procedure, so your child feels at ease, and we will never proceed with any treatment until they are ready.
Our dentists may recommend additional services for your little one as they get older such as fluoride treatments or dental sealants. Fluoride helps to strengthen their developing teeth and remineralize areas that may have been affected by bacteria or tooth decay. It can also be easily incorporated into their routine cleaning appointment and doesn't require any extra time or visits.
Dental sealants are a thin liquid coating that is placed over the chewing surfaces of your child's teeth and then cured and hardened to protect against the bacteria and acids that cause tooth decay. Sealants are typically recommended for children as we have observed fewer cavities in children who have sealants as opposed to those who don't.
