How Many Dental Cleanings Should I get Every Year?

Even if you brush and floss your teeth religiously at home, there's simply no way for at-home care alone to keep up with your oral care. Professional cleanings allow your dentist to clear your teeth of any build-up that brushing may have missed, and it also allows your dentist to identify any concerns before they become more serious issues.

What to Expect From Regular Dental Cleanings

For normal dental cleanings, most people need to visit the dentist twice a year to stay healthy. However, if you have developed a condition like gum disease, your dentist may recommend that you visit more frequently, and undergo more intense cleanings to ensure that your teeth and gums stay healthy. For a normal dental cleaning, here's the process that you can expect:

  • Exam:  Your dentist will first take the time to manually examine your teeth to look for any cavities that may have formed, or any more serious issues that could have developed since your last visit.
  • X-rays: If you are keeping up with your regular dentist visits, most patients only need to have x-rays taken once a year. So depending on which visit of the year you are on, your dentist may have you take x-rays as well. This allows your dentist to see areas of the teeth and gums that are otherwise not visible, allowing your dentist to address any issues before they become more serious.
  • Removing buildup: Your dentist or a hygienist will then begin the actual cleaning process. This starts with removing any plaque or tartar buildup that has developed on your teeth since your last cleaning. This process involves scraping off any buildup from each tooth completely to ensure that it is completely cleaned.
  • Gritty cleaning: Next, your hygienist will use a powered brush and gritty toothpaste that gently scrubs and polishes your teeth. This will give you that smooth feeling to your teeth after your cleaning.
  • Floss:  Having your teeth professionally flossed ensures that every inch of your teeth will be cleaned completely. Even if you floss regularly at home, it's common to have a few problem areas, and this professional flossing can ensure those areas are thoroughly cleaned as well!
