First dental visits are important for setting your child up for successful visits in the future, and our dentists understand this at Toronto Lakeshore Dental. We love seeing children at our dental office and are dedicated to making their appointments fun and upbeat. Here's what you can expect at your child's first visit with your dentist in Etobicoke.
At What Age Should Their First Visit Take Place?
Dr. Joo and Dr. Moore like seeing children around their first birthday or even earlier if parents have concerns. Starting early helps acclimate your child to our office, the "big chair," and what happens during a typical dental visit. Our goal is for them to feel comfortable and look forward to their appointments.
We can also inform parents of any developmental concerns we see early on. The first dental visit is a great time for parents to ask questions about their child's dental health. Parents may want to know:
- How can I support my child's home care routine?
- How often should my little one visit their dentist?
- When should we expect the first teeth to fall out?
- What happens if my child has a tooth emergency?
We love answering questions for our patients to ensure they have the information they need to make informed decisions about their oral health.
What Happens During the First Visit?
When your child first comes in, we spend a lot of time helping them to feel at ease. We'll count their teeth and perform an examination if they feel comfortable with that.
As they get older, we'll incorporate a cleaning into their appointment, and we may recommend additional services such as fluoride treatments to build and strengthen their teeth and dental sealants to protect them from tooth decay. If your child chooses to participate in sports, our doctors can discuss the right protective wear for your child's teeth and mouth.
We'll also inform you of the need for orthodontic treatment or straightening their teeth as their permanent teeth arrive. We typically recommend their first orthodontic evaluation take place around age seven or eight.
