At Toronto Lakeshore Dental, we strive to provide our patients with the best and most convenient dental care possible. One way we do that is by offering the latest technological advancements to streamline our dental treatments. If you need a dental crown in Etobicoke, our CEREC® technology allows us to create your restoration in our dental office. This eliminates the dental lab, so you can have your new CEREC crowns in only one dental visit.

Sound too good to be true? Well, here’s everything you need to know about CEREC same-day restorations.

A Dental Crown Protects Your Tooth

If you have a tooth that has been weakened from root canal therapy, broken, or decayed, your dentist may recommend a dental crown. A dental crown is a cap that covers and protects your entire tooth, restoring your tooth’s function and aesthetics.

What Is CEREC Same-Day Technology?

CEREC, or Chairside Economical Restorations of Esthetic Ceramic, is the latest technology for creating tooth restorations. CEREC uses computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) to help your dentist make and place a dental crown in a single visit.

Once a 3-D model of your tooth has been digitally created, we place a block of ceramic into the CEREC machine, and in about twenty minutes, your restoration is complete.

This revolutionary technology has streamlined the dental crown process; because the CEREC milling unit is located in our office, there is no longer a need for an outside dental laboratory. This makes your dental crown more economical and allows you to protect your tooth as quickly as possible.

Same-Day Dentistry Benefits for Our Etobicoke Patients

Because we offer same-day dentistry in our dental office, you can expect the following benefits from a CEREC same-day restoration:

  • You will only have to make one trip to our dental office for the entire CEREC crown procedure.
  • You won’t have to worry about an ill-fitting temporary crown that might fall off before your permanent dental crown is placed.
  • You have less chance of bacteria entering the prepared tooth; we will cement your CEREC crown into place just a few minutes after we prepare your tooth.
  • You can expect improved accuracy because of our use of computer-aided design and manufacturing.

The CEREC Crown Process

If you and your Etobicoke dentist decide that a same-day CEREC dental crown is right for you, here are the steps for the CEREC crown process:

Tooth Preparation

Your dentist will administer an anesthetic and remove the decayed or weakened parts of your tooth.

Digital Impression

Next, your dentist will take a 3-D impression of your tooth and then input this digital impression into the CEREC software. The software will convert the digital image into a model of your dental crown.

Milling

Our in-office milling unit will create your dental crown from a ceramic block.

That’s it!

Is a CEREC Crown the Same as a Traditional Dental Crown?

Although a traditional dental crown and a CEREC dental crown both serve the same purpose, they are different in several ways, including the following:

  • A traditional dental crown requires a temporary crown to be placed until a dental lab creates the permanent crown. A CEREC dental crown can be placed on the same day.
  • A traditional porcelain dental crown is more prone to chipping and cracking than a CEREC ceramic crown.

Both a traditional dental crown and a CEREC crown require the same type of care. You can expect your CEREC crown to last up to fifteen years with proper care and maintenance. To help your CEREC same-day crown last as long as possible, follow these guidelines:

Brush and Floss Your Teeth

You should brush your teeth twice a day and floss your teeth at least once a day to keep your dental crown free from bacteria and food particles.

Use Mouthwash

You should rinse your mouth with an anti-bacterial mouthwash after you brush to remove any remaining bacteria on or around your CEREC dental crown.

Wear a Nightguard

If you clench or grind your teeth at night, a nightguard can protect your CEREC dental crown from wear.

Avoid Bad Habits

If you bite your nails or chew on ice, you are more likely to break your CEREC dental crown.

Visit Your Etobicoke Dentist

Make sure to visit your dentist for regular dental exams and cleanings twice a year.
