Most people understand that visiting the dentist regularly is integral to staying healthy. However, dental anxiety is a prevalent issue that plagues many people, and it prevents them from getting the care that they need.

Finding a way to feel more comfortable at the dentist can help you get in for those regular exams and cleanings, which can help prevent more serious, invasive dental issues from occurring. At Toronto Lakeshore Dental, we offer several levels of dental sedation to help our patients comfortably receive the care they need.

Here's what you should know about your sedation options.

Nitrous Oxide: For Lighter Relaxation

Patients with mild anxiety may benefit from using nitrous oxide during dental procedures. This is the lightest type of relaxation we offer. You'll still be able to drive after your procedure, and this form of sedation takes the edge off of being in the dental chair without leaving you with lingering side effects.

We can use nitrous oxide with most types of procedures, and it's safe for adults and children.

IV Sedation: Receive Complete Relaxation During Dental Procedures

At Toronto Lakeshore Dental, Dr. Joo is extensively trained and specially licensed to provide IV sedation. Medication is delivered intravenously, and Dr. Joo closely monitors your vital signs and heart rate throughout the procedure.

IV sedation can be ideal for patients with these needs:

  • Difficulty sitting for long periods
  • Severe dental phobia, fear, or anxiety
  • Mental, physical, or behavioral special needs
  • Bad gag reflexes
  • Extensive treatment needs that require multiple procedures

You'll need to arrange for transportation to and from our Etobicoke dental office and should take the rest of the day off.

When Do We Recommend Dental Sedation in Etobicoke?

For extremely sensitive or phobic patients, dental sedation may be needed to complete dental cleanings and checkups. Preventive teeth cleanings and checkups are one of the best ways you can protect your smile against common dental problems like tooth decay and gum disease, so if you're fearful about dental procedures, you may consider using nitrous oxide for teeth cleanings to help you feel at ease during these procedures that are essential for protecting your dental health and overall well-being.

Sedation dentistry is also an excellent option for more complex dental treatment procedures, such as:

  • Dental crowns
  • Root canal treatment
  • Tooth extraction
  • Gum surgeries
  • Dental bridges
  • Tooth implants
  • Periodontal treatment

If you feel that you or a loved one could benefit from dental sedation during dental treatment, we encourage you to discuss your options with one of our dentists. We're happy to create a sedation dentistry plan that will help you feel comfortable, safe, and relaxed in the dental chair every time you visit our Etobicoke dental office.

Preparing for a Dental Appointment with Sedation

Dental procedures with nitrous oxide require no preparation, as the sedation won't leave you with lasting side effects. Most patients head back to work or home after treatment with nitrous oxide and continue their everyday activities.

If you choose more profound relaxation for your procedures, you'll need transportation to and from your dental appointment and plenty of time for the medication's effects to wear off. It's typically recommended that you take the day off from work or other daily activities after using IV sedation.
