Many people are afraid that root canal treatments will be painful, but we actually perform a root canal to relieve pain. We recommend root canal therapy when a tooth experiences severe decay and infection. This often causes intense pain for the patient.

If you aren't routinely visiting your dentist every six months, you may increase your risk of needing a root canal since you won't be able to catch and treat cavities before they become more problematic.

Once tooth decay reaches the inside of your tooth, it's too severe to fill with a regular dental filling. It can also cause an infection in the pulp of your tooth, which can be a source of pain. Once the decay has reached this point, root canal treatment in Etobicoke is necessary to save the tooth.

The Root Canal Procedure

Here is what you can expect during your root canal procedure step-by-step:

Anesthetic

Your dentist will start the procedure by applying an anesthetic to the affected area to prevent you from feeling any discomfort during the procedure. This is typically a combination of topical anesthetic agents and a shot. While many people are afraid process, this step actually relieves the pain caused by your infection immediately while ensuring you don't feel anything during your treatment.

Access

The next step in the process is for your dentist to access the affected areas of your tooth and remove the infected tissues.

Removing the Infected Tissue

Your dentist will remove the dead tissue and pulp from your tooth and any decay that has built up. Since your dentist also removes the nerves, it will also relieve your pain.

Cleaning

Before the tooth is temporarily sealed, your dentist will completely clean and disinfect the inside of it. This ensures that no further decay or infection will form after the completion.

Healing and Rebulding

We'll give your tooth time to heal after your root canal procedure. Once it's healed, you'll return to Toronto Lakeshore Dental for a permanent filling or crown to strengthen your tooth.

Root Canal Aftercare

It's normal for your tooth to feel tender after root canal treatment. Your dentist may also prescribe an antibiotic to ensure that you remain infection-free.

Stick to soft foods right after your procedure, and get plenty of rest. Your tooth should begin to feel normal again after a couple of days.
